Mentoplasty
Chin surgery or Mentoplasty is a surgical procedure to correct the chin, either by improving it with an implant or reducing the bone on the lower ledge.
Plastic surgery and other minor outpatient procedures can be performed on the lower jawline and chin area to improve facial proportions and help the wearer regain confidence and self-esteem. In addition, these types of procedures are often suggested by board-certified plastic surgeons to enhance the harmony of facial features and improve chin-jaw-cheek-forehead balance.
Sometimes the bone from the jaw can be moved forward in an operation called Mentoplasty or Genioplasty. Alternatively, molded silicone implants can provide more excellent chin projection. Conversely, bone can be removed to reduce an overly protruding chin. Additionally, upper and lower jaw adjustments may be recommended to improve chewing dynamics and occlusion – or how the teeth fit together (bite). These operations can range from simple to very complex.
A plastic surgeon may recommend chin surgery or procedures to a patient who is also dealing with a nose problem to achieve better facial proportions, as the size of the chin can increase or minimize the perceived size of the nose.
In addition, the expert can also suggest using filler materials as part of aesthetic medicine procedures when a filler is applied to the chin. It can adjust the size and shape of the chin in certain situations and replace surgery.
Types of chin surgery
Surgery may be performed on the chin to change or improve its appearance. The two main types of chin surgery are either chin augmentation or reduction.
Chin augmentation / implants
Chin augmentation surgery is usually performed to enlarge an insufficiently protruded chin. It is typically achieved by placing the implant directly on the bone. Next, a small incision is made either inside the mouth or under the skin of the chin. After the implant is placed, the incision is closed with stitches. Slight swelling may occur within a few days, and patients can usually return to work within a week.
Chin reduction surgery
Chin reduction surgery is performed to reduce a prominent or protruding chin.
The operation is usually performed under general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure. Next, a small incision is made either inside the mouth or under the skin of the chin. Excess bone is removed, and the chin is shaped into the desired shape. The incision is closed with stitches.
