Reduction of a high forehead
Surgery aimed at reducing a high forehead is a cosmetic procedure that can help reduce the forehead’s height and bring the facial elements’ individual proportions into harmony.
A more prominent forehead can be caused by genetics, hair loss, or other cosmetic procedures. This surgical option – hairline reduction surgery – can help balance the face’s proportions. However, it is different from a brow lift procedure.
What does a forehead reduction procedure involve?
Forehead reduction surgery is a surgical procedure that is usually performed under general anesthesia. A local anesthetic is also used on the forehead to reduce pain and bleeding.
The procedure of the procedure
The plastic surgeon will perform the following steps during the procedure:
The hairline and area of the forehead to be removed will be marked with a surgical marker on the surface of the forehead. Great care is taken to ensure that the border along the hairline preserves the hair follicles and nerves.
The entire forehead, from the hairline to the area just above the eyebrows, is numbed with a local anesthetic.
The incision is made along the marked forehead and hairline area (a pretrial incision). The surgeon carefully separates the skin from the underlying connective tissue and removes the marked area.
The top incision along the hairline is then brought down to connect with the forehead incision. It closes the gap and shortens the forehead.
The skin is sutured to minimize scarring and is almost entirely hidden by the hairline as the hair grows back.
It should be noted that although forehead reduction surgery reduces the height of the forehead and may change the appearance of the brow, it does not necessarily lift the brow.
If necessary, a separate surgical procedure called eyebrow lifting can be performed simultaneously with hairline reduction surgery.
Recovery
Most people can go home within a few hours after surgery. After more than a week, the stitches are removed.
As with any surgery that involves an incision, great care must be taken to keep the wound clean and allow it to heal properly.
Who is a suitable candidate for forehead reduction surgery?
Forehead reduction surgery can be used to balance the proportions of the overall facial structure.
You can use forehead reduction surgery if you have:
- high hairline and want to reduce it
- big forehead and you want to reduce it
- thick hair that is disproportionate to the height of your hairline
- low or heavy eyebrows and the intention to change the proportions of your face
- you recently had your eyebrows done and want to move your hairline forward
However, even with these criteria, not everyone is a suitable candidate for forehead reduction surgery, each case is individual.
For a successful forehead reduction surgery, it is necessary to have good scalp flexibility (the ability of the scalp tissue to be flexible).
If there is a family history of baldness, forehead reduction surgery may not be suitable.
What are the potential risks and side effects?
All surgical procedures carry risks. Risks of forehead reduction surgery include:
- bleeding during and after surgery
- side effects of general anesthesia
- allergy to general or local anesthesia
- infection of the incision area
- nerve damage at the cut site
- paresthesia at the site of surgery
- paresthesia at the site of surgery
- scarring after the incision has healed
For most people, the benefits of forehead reduction surgery outweigh the risks. If the surgery is performed by an experienced, skilled practitioner, the risk of visible scarring and long-term effects is minimal.
In the case of the problem of a high forehead, we also recommend the possibility of surgery – thread lifting and hairline transplantation, which could also be a possible solution for your problem.
