What is Platelet Rich Plasma?

Platelet-rich plasma consists of two elements:

Plasma, or the liquid part of blood, and platelets, a type of blood cell that play an essential role in healing the whole body.

Platelets are known for their clotting ability. However, they also contain growth factors that can trigger cell reproduction and stimulate tissue regeneration or healing in the treated area. Platelet-rich plasma is simply blood that contains more platelets than usual.

To create platelet-rich plasma, doctors take a blood sample from a patient and place it in a machine called a centrifuge, which rapidly spins the selection, separating the other blood components from the platelets and concentrating them into plasma.

What is a PRP injection?

After creating platelet-rich plasma from a patient’s blood sample, this solution is injected into a target area, such as an injured knee or tendon. In some cases, the doctor may use ultrasound to guide the injection. The goal is to increase the concentration of specific proteins or hormones, called growth factors, in a particular area to speed up the healing process.

The mechanism of PRP injections has yet to be fully understood. However, studies show that the increased concentration of growth factors in platelet-rich plasma can stimulate or accelerate the healing process, shorten wound healing time, reduce pain, and even promote hair growth.

What is PRP treatment used for?

PRP injections may treat a range of musculoskeletal injuries and conditions. In addition, they speed up the healing process. For example, chronic tendon injuries such as tennis elbow or jumper’s knee often take a long time to heal. Adding PRP injections to a treatment regimen can help stimulate healing, reduce pain, and allow for an earlier return to activities. PRP is also widely used in Aesthetic Medicine and as a support for solving the problems of Plastic Surgery.

Hair loss

PRP injections can be effective in treating male pattern baldness, both in preventing hair loss and in promoting new hair growth. PRP can also help stimulate hair growth after a hair transplant.

Skin rejuvenation

PRP injections are also an anti-aging treatment, but there is little evidence that PRP reduces wrinkles and other signs of aging.

Risks and side effects of PRP therapy

A PRP injection is a low-risk procedure and usually does not cause serious side effects. However, the method involves a blood draw. You should ensure you are hydrated and eating beforehand to avoid feeling dizzy. After the process, you may experience pain and bruising at the injection site.

Because PRP injections consist of the patient’s cells and  plasma, the risk of an allergic reaction is much lower than other injectable drugs, such as corticosteroids. Less common risks of PRP injections include:

  • Tissue damage
  • Infection
  • Nerve injuries
