Dental hygiene is one of the most essential treatments from the point of view of dental health and is an integral part of dental care and prevention. Improper and insufficient oral hygiene leads to tooth decay, gingivitis, or periodontitis, so it is not only a treatment procedure but a preventive measure against the occurrence of the diseases above.

The bacteria that cause painful tooth decay, gingivitis, and periodontitis are found in dental plaque. So, knowing how to care for your teeth properly and have the plaque removed regularly (at least once every six months) is very important.

The dental hygienist sensitively removes tartar-mineralized coating and pigmentation with a laser or ultrasound, which disrupts the tartar structure thanks to the frequency of the waves. When the teeth are free of coarse deposits, the plaques are cleaned by sandblasting (Air polishing). Mechanical cleaning usually follows the ultrasonic treatment and consists in cleaning the remains of tartar in hard-to-reach places using scrapers and dental curettes.

After cleaning the teeth, the gums are treated with disinfectant and anti-inflammatory solutions. After the procedure, the teeth are strengthened with a concentrated fluoride gel to strengthen the teeth’s defense against new cavities.

What is tooth sandblasting (Airflow)

Airflow or teeth sandblasting is a mixture of sodium bicarbonate with water and air, which under pressure, removes coatings and incredibly dark to black pigmentation caused by coffee, tea, and smoking. The advantage of sandblasting is that it removes the layer and pigments from hard-to-reach places. It is also very suitable for orthodontic patients (with fixed orthodontic appliances). Often the result of sandblasting is lightening the teeth by a few shades due to the removed pigments. After sandblasting, the enamel is polished with a fine paste.

Fluoridation at the end of treatment

At the end of the treatment, teeth are fluoridated or disinfected in patients suffering from gingivitis or periodontitis. Fluoridation is an effective prevention against the formation of tooth decay. It creates a protective film resistant to acids on the surface of the teeth. Disinfectant solutions help reduce the amount of harmful bacteria and have a positive effect on the healing of inflammation.

Dental hygiene is recommended every six months. If tartar formation is excessive or periodontal disease is present, it is recommended to perform hygiene more often.
